You are invited to a presentation and discussion on grassroots peacebuilding initiatives in Indonesia and Australia with eminent speakers and practitioners:


  • Prof. Greg Barton, Deakin University
  • Siti Nurwati Hodijah, National Commission on Violence against Women in Indonesia
  • Practitioners from Indonesia and Australia with Initiatives of Change, an international network of people who seek to “be the change you want to see in the world”

The discussion will be followed by afternoon tea.

Prof. Greg Barton is one of Australia's leading scholars on Indonesia and an internationally renowned expert on terrorism, extremism and political history. He is a sought-after media commentator on topics ranging from terrorism to the war in Ukraine and extremism. He is currently Chair in Global Islamic Politics at the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation, and the author and editor of numerous books and book chapters, including Countering Violent and Hateful Extremism in Indonesia: Islam, Gender and Civil Society (2021).

Siti Nurwati Hodijah (‘Nungky’) is a researcher into the roots of family violence. She will speak about the role of trauma in radicalisation.

Practitioners from Initiatives of Change Indonesia will present a model for strengthening family relationships as the foundation for making positive change in the world (Sekolah Rekonsiliasi) and their work of healing intergenerational trauma from inter-ethnic conflicts.

Practitioners from Initiatives of Change Australia will present practices for reconciliation and truth-telling with Indigenous communities, women’s peace circles, and ethical leadership workshops.
