About this event

Do you find it difficult to learn how to crochet as a left-hander? In this 3-hour workshop, you'll be working alongside Trish Stannus, (who also found learning crochet as a left-handed problematic), to learn the major crochet stitches the left-handed way.

You'll learn how to start a project (by making a cotton face-washer or dish-cloth), do a chain stitch, a double crochet stitch, change colour and cast off.

By the end of this workshop, you'll be able to do the basic crochet stitches (left-handed!) and have the confidence to start your own crochet projects! You may also like to join the follow-up crochet series (A Crochet Project for Left-handed Beginners) with Trish to make a 'granny square' bag.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is suitable for left-handed (only) absolute beginners (of any age over 12).

For children under 12, we recommend that an adult accompany them to the workshop.

As this workshop has been specially designed for left-handers, if you are right-handed we have a beginners workshop for you with Terri Walker, Learn to Crochet, please follow this for updates on our next sessions.

What do I need to bring?

So you can keep working on your project after the class and complete it, you will need to bring:

  • two 50g balls of 8 ply 100%, cotton yarn in contrasting colours
  • one 5mm crochet hook

We recommend 100% cotton rather than blended with acrylic from a sustainable point of view (100% cotton can biodegrade at the end of life but when blended with acrylic this makes end-of-life options difficult). Some cotton yarns can split easily making it hard to work with so we are recommending 4 Seasons Flinders (8ply)from Spotlight or other brands from Knits Needles & Wool at 155 Charles st Launceston, where the yarn is tightly twisted and therefore not easily 'splittable'.

We hope to see you at The ReDress Hub soon!

Your workshop facilitator, Trish Stannus.

Trish has revealed that her textile journey started at primary school where she hand-stitched a two-toned apron in grade 3. Alongside her Mum teaching her to knit, she studied sewing throughout her school years, learning all aspects of sewing by hand and using a sewing machine.

During these years of sewing, Trish has also loved learning to crochet. Being left-handed, much of it has been self-taught. After recreating many garments from patterns, she can create garments from her own patterns adjusting for different plies of yarn and hook sizes.

Her motto: Give it a go
