Description

The EESSA Inc conference provides an opportunity for educators across all career and year levels to build their knowledge and skills, and to explore ideas from key advocates in sustainability.

Keynote speakers:

Dr Sue Elliott, Senior Lecturer and Course Co-ordinator in Early Childhood Education at the University of New England (UNE). Author of Sustainability and the Early Years Learning Framework and Outdoor learning environments: Spaces for exploration, discovery and risk taking in the early years.

Michael Williams is a senior Aboriginal (Goorang Goorang, Warlmanba, Yunkantjara, Pitjantjara, Eastern Aranda and Central Aranda) man with a long career in Indigenous Affairs. Since the early 1980’s he has spent the larger part of his career in higher education where he has been responsible for Indigenous education support programs as well as teaching and research programs.

Jupurrla McKenzie: Is a Occupier of the land – a Warlmanpa, Yunkantjara, Pitjantjara, Eastern Aranda man from Tanami Desert. He has a deep knowledge of Aboriginal lore and culture.

Sophie Thomson, Mother of five and obsessive-compulsive gardener; presenter of ABCs Gardening Australia TV and radio and author of Sophie’s Patch —living and loving gardening.

Join us as we explore:

  • What is Education for Sustainability and why is it important in the early years?
  • Environmentally Responsible: beyond a duty, a paradigm shift
  • Saving the world with gardening
  • Indigenous perspectives on sustainability
  • Pecha Kucha style provocations - why education for sustainability and EfS in practice.

This conference addresses:

  • Australian Professional Standards for Teachers: Standard 1.3, Standard 1.5, Standard 2.4, Standard 4.1, Standard 6.2, Standard 7.4
  • All 5 learning outcomes of Belonging, Being and Becoming: The Early Years Learning Framework, in particular Outcome 2 and Outcome 3.


The initial conference will be followed by two smaller events to further grow your knowledge and skills. These sessions will involve a focus on case studies of best practice in embedding sustainability and planning and teaching sustainability. Registering for the above event includes all 3 events.

Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea included.
