Learn sewing basics: threading, stitching, and machine maintenance. Perfect for beginners. Gain hands-on skills for alterations and repairs.

This workshop is designed for beginners who have never used a sewing machine, to explore the possibilities of how useful the skills would be for a broad range of tasks for example alterations, repairs etc. It will provide ’hands on’ skills and knowledge regarding the correct use and maintenance of the sewing machine. By the end of the session, you will be able to operate a sewing machine and practice various stitches.


Specific skills include:

  • Parts, functions and use of sewing machine;
  • Practice various stitches;
  • Maintaining your machines;
  • Seams and seam finishes;
  • Hem finishes.


Please bring to the class:

  • Scrap fabrics/old sheet or pillow cases or old clothes. If you don’t have any we will share!
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Sewing thread (any colour)
  • Dressmaking pins
  • Pen/Pencil
  • Rubber
  • Ruler
  • Note pad
