About this event

Happy, Healthy, and Connected SENIORS

Learn about Czech food, cooking and try delicious meals in these live cooking lessons with Vit.

There are 4 x lessons on offer and in each lesson you will earn to cook one Czech classic meal.

Vit is a professional cook by trade from Czech republic, passionate about teaching others how to cook Czech food.

Different meal per each lesson:

  • Classic Czech Garlic Soup  - Saturday 28 August 2021 (via Zoom)
  • How to make Czech Dumplings  - Saturday 25 September 2021 (via Zoom) Just note that this lesson 2 (dumplings) will help you put together meal in lesson 4, so if you skip lesson 2 you will not know how to make the dumplings which are side dish to the lesson 4 meal 'Svickova'.
  • Finger food / Canapes - Saturday 23 October 2021 (either in Beseda Club or Via Zoom - pending lockdown restrictions )
  • Czech Classic 'Svickova' - 27th November (either in Beseda Club or Via Zoom - pending lockdown restrictions )

Lesson 1 - Classic Czech Garlic Soup (aka hangover soup)

Learn how to cook this live on Saturday 28 August 2021 (via Zoom) with Vit

Czech Garlic Soup, aka Česnečka or Hangover Soup, is regarded as a cure for all ailments, including the common cold and of course hangovers. It boasts garlic, potatoes, and crunchy rye bread croutons!

Cooking along or just watch & learn?

Either options is fine but should you want to cook along live with Vit during the lesson, here is list of ingredients you'll need ready at home (1 portion):

  • 1 medium size potato
  • 1 small (100 g) sausage or smoked meat
  • 1 slice of bacon (smoked even better :)
  • 1 whole garlic
  • 500ml vegetable or beef broth
  • pinch of caraway seeds
  • 1 egg
  • 50g piece of cheese (cheddar or blue cheese or parmesan ..all goes well)
  • 1 Slice of sourdough bread
  • Salt & pepper

Lesson 2 - Bread Dumplings (Houskové knedlíky)

Learn how to cook them live on Saturday 25 September 2021 (via Zoom) with Vit

Knedlíky are traditional Czech dumplings which use a dough similar to bread dough. They're boiled and sliced, and served with a variety of traditional Czech dishes. If you enjoy Czech food, you'll definitely need to learn how to make this authentic recipe!

In this lesson Vit will show you 3 different varieties of dumplings , how the finished product should look like as well as how to cook them at your home. You can chose to just watch and learn or should you like to make these at same time as Vit does these you can too.

Varieties of dumplings you will learn how to make:

  1. The Traditional Bread Dumpling
  2. Karlovarsky Dumpling
  3. Potato based Dumpling

And as a bonus, Vit will also show you how to make a super easy super quick dumpling in a mug using just your microwave and under 10 mins :)

Either options is fine but should you want to cook along live with Vit during the lesson, here is list of ingredients you'll need ready at home :

Ingredients list for The Traditional Bread Dumplings (makes 3 whole dumplings to feed 6 people)

  • Buy 500g of Continental Flour (If you lucky IGA sometimes sells these) otherwise just get 250g of Plain Flour and 250g of Semolina
  • 300ml Milk
  • 1Egg
  • 80g of Fresh Yeast (or Dry Yeast is fine too or baking powder as last resort)
  • 4 teaspoons of white sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 8 slices of the white toast bread, cut into 1/2-inch pieces

Ingredients list for Karlovarsky Dumpling

  • 15-20 slices of white toast (left outside day or 2 so little dry is better)
  • 2-3 eggs
  • 300ml milk
  • 50g Plain flour
  • 50g Semolina
  • Bunch of fresh parsley
  • 2 x pinch of nutmeg
  • Salt

Ingredients list for 'Potato Dumpling'

  • 500g cooked potatoes (day before and chilled overnight)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoon of salt
  • 50g Semolina
  • 50g flour

Ingredients for a quick dumpling in a cup (easy option)

  • 1 Cup of of Self raising flour
  • 1 Cup of milk
  • 10 slices of white toast bread
  • 1 egg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 50g of butter

Lesson 3 - Czech Style Canapes (Obložené Chlebíčky etc)

Learn how to make amazing czech style party food live on Saturday 23 October 2021 (via Zoom) with Vit

Obložené Chlebíčky are small open-faced appetizer sandwiches featuring assorted eggs, meats, cheeses, and vegetables and are meant to be eaten in a few small bites.

Either options is fine but should you want to cook along live with Vit during the lesson, here is list of ingredients you'll need ready at home (this will provide a nice plate of finger food for a small group of 4-6 people:)

  • Baguette Roll
  • Cream Cheese (e.g Philadelphia)
  • Mayo
  • Ham slices
  • Salami slices
  • Cheddar Cheese
  • 2 Eggs
  • Sour Cucumbers
  • 1 Green, Red & yellow capsicum
  • 1 red onion
  • Garlic
  • Fresh Parsley
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Large Serving plate / wooden board or reasonably big mirror

Lesson 4 - Beef in sour cream sauce (Svíčková na smetaně)

Learn how to cook this Czech all time favourite live on Saturday 27 November 2021 (via Zoom) with Vit

Svíčková na smetaně, the queen of Czech sauces. This creamy sauce is popular among Czechs, but it’s also typical food that everybody should try while visiting the Czech Republic.

Cooking along or just watch & learn?

Either options is fine but should you want to cook along live with Vit during the lesson, here is list of ingredients you'll need ready at home (serves 6 people or 4 really hungry Czechs :) ). Please note this does not include ingredients for the dumplings (this is covered in lesson 2)

  • 1.5kg Beef Bolar Blade (raw)
  • 200g of Smoked Speck or Bacon (not sliced)
  • 750 g Carrots
  • 750 g Celeriac (the big white round root veg.. don't confuse it with Celery)
  • 2 large brown onions
  • 1/2 block of lard or any other fat you prefer.. (vegetable oil works ok too)
  • 1/4 block of butter
  • 250ml pouring cream (for whipping)
  • Freshly ground pepper
  • 1 whole lemon
  • Salt
  • 3 teaspoons of Brown sugar
  • Bay leaves
  • 1.5 l of Beef stock
  • Whole Cranberry sauce
