There is a problem with the nature and organisation of engagement in Australian universities. It is diverse and multi-faceted; it is devoutly desired yet often invisible; and in many places is honoured in the breach rather than the practice. Engagement Australia’s signature UA Leadership Forum titled From Agency to Action! will this year give you the opportunity to hear from some of the world’s leading experts in University engagement about how they are shaping and integrating the very best of what has been learned with practice – both locally and globally. You will hear about the latest strategies, techniques and international projects that are being applied in widely differing university contexts across an institutional landscape which is proud to be diverse and different, including:

  • a major project involving TEN Australian universities which is underway this year to adopt and adapt the international Carnegie Engagement ‘Gold standard’ for the Australian HE sector.
  • a Nous Group Project led by the University of Melbourne, University of Chicago, King’s College London, which is looking at global incentives for institutional engagement and the intricacies of making and measuring engagement truly global.
This leadership forum builds upon the success of the recent EA Symposium, themed Critically Engaged Universities of the Future which highlighted the fact that the sector is in need of its own ‘song’ with engagement being at the heart of future renditions. The emergent theme is that ‘engagement’ is a very diverse concept (research, teaching, learning and social analysis are all involved). Nevertheless, it must have form and shape, and its own intellectual definition and integrity, which can bind the diverse and varied content within a focused perspective.

Join us to hear from our panel of experts that will include Executives, Vice Chancellors and Senior Managers in conversation with Professor Mary Stuart, Vice Chancellor of Lincoln University – recently honoured as one of the UK’s ‘Most Inspiring Leaders’ due to her work in civic engagement. The session will seek to build ‘unity in diversity’ as we move towards a truly engaged sector: a step from agency to action.
