Lags: the West Australian Convict Experience
Event Information
About this Event
Unlike other places in Australia, the Swan River colony was founded as a free settlement, but after two decades of unremitting struggle, the settlers appealed to Britain for convicts to help build the colony.
Convicts known as ‘LAGS’ coming to Western Australia generally had a better experience than those in New South Wales and Tasmania, and many later became valuable citizens, helping to lay the foundations of Western Australia.
Hear Bill Edgar talk about some of the fascinating lives of these men, and their contribution to our history
