Description

This hands on school holiday workshop is aimed at 7 to 12 year olds. Each participant learn how to propagate a variety of garden and native plants and make a mini greenhouse from upcycled materials that they can take home along with information sheets. This workshop is being delivered in partnership with the Friends of Eric Singleton Wetlands.

What participants will learn:

  • How to take cuttings from a variety of herb, garden and native plants

  • How to process a variety of seed

  • How to make a "mini greenhouse" from upcycled bottles

What participants will receive:

  • Handouts on how to propagate from seed and cuttings

  • Cuttings and potted up seed to take home

  • A "mini greenhouse" and designs

All materials supplied. Children must be accompanied by and adult - accompanying adult tickets are free.

About the Facilitator
This workshop will be facilitated by Yann Toussaint from the Rainbow Coast Community Garden. Yann is a gardener, poet and sustainability educator who lives in Albany, Western Australia. A former nursery manager at Men of the Trees, where he helped found the Children's Forest, he now runs the popular "Garden Grubs" children's gardening club through the Rainbow Coast Neighbourhood Centre's Community Garden, delivers a wide range of sustainability workshops and teaches at the University of Western Australia's Albany Campus.

About Friends of Eric Singleton Wetlands
Friends of Eric Singleton Wetlands is a newly formed group which aims to protect, restore and advocate for the wetland areas within Riverside Gardens, Bayswater. The Eric Singleton Wetlands area provides habitat to a diverse range of plant species, birdlife and native terrestrial and aquatic animals. This area includes the Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary, the Eric Singleton West site and Lot 14, 128 King William St (also known as Carters Wetland).

Liaising with the City of Bayswater and supported by Environment House, our group intends to engage local community, with the goal of enhancing and appreciating this vital wetland habitat and the surrounding Riverside Gardens. The group intends to have a family friendly focus offering a range of restoration activities, education initiatives, and events.
