Kid’s Native Freshwater Fish Workshop & Storytime

Kid’s Native Freshwater Fish Workshop & Storytime

Overview

Join fish author Steve Baines for a kids’ workshop and storytime as we launch B4C’s Ornate Rainbowfish breeding program.

Kid’s Native Freshwater Fish Workshop & Storytime 🐟📚

Our local native freshwater fish are under threat — but we are doing our part to protect these precious species before they disappear.

Join children’s author and self-confessed fish nerd Steve Baines for a fun, hands-on workshop and storytime for kids and families. This special event will mark the release of captive Spring Creek Ornate Rainbowfish into B4C’s breeding ponds, officially launching our native fish breeding program.

Children will enjoy a reading from one of Steve’s books and learn simple, practical ways they can help protect Australia’s native freshwater fish.

Late last year, nine Honey Blue-eyes were released into our back pond and we are now seeing the first babies — a wonderful sign that conservation efforts really do make a difference.

The Spring Creek Ornate Rainbowfish is a genetically distinct population found in the middle of the Bulimba Creek catchment. Like honey blue-eyes, it is threatened by introduced species such as gambusia, as well as land clearing and urban development.

About the presenter

Steve Baines is a passionate fish educator, co-founder of Fish in Schools, and author of the Rodney Rainbowfish series and four children’s books celebrating Australia’s freshwater wildlife.

A fun, hopeful and educational event for curious kids and nature-loving families.
