The Early Years in Education Society strives to be leaders in advocating “best practice” for the early years in education for children, teachers and policy formation.Early Years in Education is a non profit organisation. The committee members are volunteers from public, independent, catholic schools and retired teachers.  The committee plan and organise events for K-3 educators and parents.

The Neuro-Science of Play (Claire Orange)
‘It’s child’s play’ they say, but little do they know that what’s happening is complex, necessary, neurologically imperative and is forming templates for the many social, emotional and learning interactions over the life of the child. From what to expect developmentally right through to teaching the skills that play provides to children, this session will explore the science of play and provide practical strategies to help every child to learn, every teacher to facilitate and every administrator to understand the intense, immense, imperative and incredible need for play in the early years. Finding the Balance (Justine Moorman) 
How do you create a learning program for K-2 classrooms that allows for student agency and play but also provides explicit instruction of key concepts and skills ? Justine will help you discover ways to find the balance and provide a rich, creative and rigorous learning program that includes explicit instruction while also allowing for learning through play and child-led learning. Explore what a rigorous, well designed classroom program that balances explicit and play strategies looks like, see examples of planning, tracking and assessment of student learning and look inside the ece classrooms of WA schools who are finding the balance. Links to current research, SCSA and Department of Education WA documentation will be provided to demonstrate that play-based learning is the foundation pedagogy for early childhood and maximises student learning in all developmental domains including cognitive/academic. From their early years of education, children are learning all about themselves and others—and all of that rich learning forms their life templates. Helping little children into positive and lasting patterns of social, emotional and learning resilience is assisted by a regular, repeated and research-based approach to introducing and teaching the skills. Aligned with the Early Years Learning Framework, Claire identifies the components of resilience— like empathy, self-regulation, self-acceptance, tricking silliness… and shows how to teach them explicitly to children.

Ask Claire and Justine your burning questions related to early childhood teaching, play-based learning, anxiety, resilience, social skill development and more ! We will finish the day with an informal Q&A about all things ECE covering elements such as pedagogy, programming, policy, On Entry, connecting with families / communities and more - the group will have the opportunity to guide the final section towards their key areas of interest. Claire Orange is the mother of 4 boys, a therapist, author, media spokesperson, speaker and a passionate advocate for better outcomes for children everywhere.
Graduating as a Speech Pathologist (B Sci Speech & Hearing Science, Hons) in the early 90’s, Claire has also completed qualifications in Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Resilience Education, Counselling and Parenting Coaching.
In 2015, Claire partnered with Helen Davidson to form BEST Programs 4 Kids. Together they have co-authored 14 books on Social and Emotional Learning including an Early Years Social Skills Kit and 4 part classroom curriculum linked to the Australian National Curriculum.
Claire also appears as the resident Parenting Expert on Channel Nine, 6PR-882 radio and ABC radio. She is a passionate advocate for preventative measures in children’s mental health that help all children and their families to flourish.

Justine Moorman is an ECE teacher with over 20 years of teaching experience in a range of roles and grades including all grades K-3, numeracy specialist (GiRN) and school leadership.
She is the WA representative on the AEU National Early Childhood Committee, has participated in Department of Education expert panels for On Entry writing and numeracy and is the founder and administrator of the facebook group 'Teaching Pre Primary & ECE WA'. Justine is also the current Vice President of the Early Years in Education Society (EYES).
