About this event

Kanangra began life as a steam ferry in 1912. During her long working life, she transported over 40 million passengers on Sydney Harbour throughout two world wars, the great depression, and the opening of both Harbour Bridge and Opera House before being retired in 1980 and preserved by the Sydney Heritage Fleet.

She is now out of the water at the Fleet’s Heritage Shipyard in Rozelle Bay, where her restoration to former glory is underway by a band of dedicated volunteer workers.

This is a rare opportunity for you to see the restoration work taking place by a group of dedicated volunteers from Sydney Heritage Fleet.

Participants must be over 18, fit enough to climb steep stairs and confidently walk on uneven surfaces. We will provide basic PPE items: hard hats, safety glasses and Hi Vis vests for participants. However flat-soled covered footwear must be worn, while bringing a light windproof jacket and sun/rain wear is recommended.

The tour will include not only the interior of the Kanangra and a talk on her history and details of the restoration but will provide a chance to see other historic vessels previously restored and now operated by the Fleet, plus the impressive workshop and restoration facilities that have made The Fleet renowned as a ship restorer throughout the world.

Tour will start and finish at the Sydney Heritage Fleet's Shipyard at Gate 4, James Craig Road, Rozelle. Our guide will meet you at the shipyard gate for a pre-tour talk in the workers’ mess.
