Journeys and Memories - Piano Recital
Sat. 22 October 2016, 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm ACST
You are invited to an evening of musical experiences that capture emotions, places and moods.
The piano recital will feature the premiere of new solo piano works by Darwin composers Cathy Applegate (Saudades) and Nora Lewis (Vagarie). Their pieces, commissioned for this recital, respond to the evening's themes of memory and journey, and convey a sense of adventure both musically and in spirit.
Another Australian composer, Miriam Hyde, will also feature in this recital with her atmospheric composition The Ring of New Bells.
A selection of Frederic Chopin's Preludes encapsulates the powerful emotions arising from his miniature compositions. Franz Liszt's poetry and imagery will also be highlighted in Sposalizio, a composition that depicts his response to a painting by Raphael that he viewed in Italy.
Michael Nyman's film scores for The Diary of Anne Frank and The Piano evoke memories and journeys ranging from the legacy of the diarist Anne Frank writing in the secret annex of her house along the canals of Amsterdam, to the haunting image of the piano left to the wild elements on the rugged coastline of New Zealand.
The recital concludes with guest local performers Anastasia Coroneo (violin) and Cathy Applegate (cello) joining James Teh (piano) for the first movement of the Piano Trio No. 1 in B Major by Johannes Brahms. This richly coloured chamber music work traverses a wide variety of moods and emotions.
James has been the Darwin Chorale's rehearsal pianist since 2011. He has performed with the Darwin Chorale in many of its performances, including the recent Beatles Cabaret concert in July 2016. He has also accompanied OperatuNiTy's production of Gilbert & Sullivan's Princess Ida.
