Japanese Plane Making Workshop in Sydney

Cost: $850 including tools and materials

9:00-12:00 | 13:00-16:00; 6 hours in total

There will be an optional evening lecture on one of the nights from 18:00 - 19:30

Content

  1. Learn about setting up Japanese chisels, including Japanese waterstone sharpening.
  2. Make a Japanese Plane block. (48mm single blade plane with a brass mouth fitting)

You will gain the following from signing up

  1. A 48 mm Japanese hand plane and 24 mm Japanese chisel, all made yourself by hand.
  2. Hands-on knowledge about Japanese tools (chisels and planes)
  3. Chisel skills through making the plane block, using your perfectly set chisel.
  4. Detailed knowledge about Japanese plane making.
  5. Thin shavings from your plane!

My intention for this class is to pass on my knowledge about Japanese planes and chisels including how to set them up yourself for future use.

Day 1 - 2nd of June 2018

AM: Setting chisel hoop

PM: Lapping the back / Sharpening

Evening: Lecture 1 (option)

Day 2 - 3rd of June 2018

AM: Plane blade sharpening / truing water stone

PM: Plane blade sharpening / selecting timber

Day 3 - 9th of June 2018

AM: Marking and roughing out

PM: Roughing out

Evening: Lecture 2 (option)

Day 4 - 10th of June 2018

AM: Fitting blade

PM: Fitting brass mouth

Evening: Free discussion (option)

Day 5 - 11th of June 2018

AM: Tuning the sole / final finish

PM: Finishing / Test shaving

Total Fee

$850 for all 5 days in the workshop and includes:

  • use of tools
  • 48 mm plane blade (blue paper steel, Inoue Hamono)
  • 24 mm Japanese Chisel (Inoue Hamono)
  • timber block for plane making
  • 3 mm brass plate
