Event Details

The dynamic Aboriginal community of Yarrabah is surrounded by a unique landscape of tropical native bushland and mountain ranges that meet sandy coastlines and coral reefs. In Jabu Birriny, Yarrabah artists share contemporary stories through vibrant prints, intricately woven vessels and textured ceramics that collectively celebrate and embody the land and sea.

Join Jabu Birriny artist Philomena Yeatman and curator Freja Carmichael for an exclusive tour of the exhibition followed by a weaving workshop in the talking circle.

The art of weaving and basket making has been passed on through the generations and depicts the skills and patience that has been part of the Aboriginal culture for centuries. Philomena is a renowned weaver, dedicated to continuing these traditions for the future. Learn from an expert craftswoman and express your creativity as you create a unique piece of art.

Just confirmed - we will also have Elverina Johnson, NAIDOC artist of the year 2017, joining us to lead a workshop creating palm frond containers inspired by the land and sea of Yarrabah. Take home your own hand crafted basket!
