This half-day workshop led by Dr Sharna Barker, provides an overview and introduction to exhibition development. As a practising artist and arts worker, Sharna offers an artist-led approach alongside logistical considerations to transform 'idea to outcome'.

The workshop will cover understanding and responding to a theme, and how to articulate this in an artist statement. Here, the workshop will provide participants with practical ways to frame and contextualise their artwork. Through brainstorming, writing activities and research, Sharna will address elements of context, relevance, and quality.

Participants will also gain knowledge on how to realise an exhibition and key components of writing an exhibition proposal and/or preparing and presenting their own show in artist-run spaces.

BIO
Dr Sharna Barker is an artist and arts worker based in Brisbane/Meanjin. She is Exhibition Program Officer at Museums & Galleries QLD and is a founding co-director of IN | artist run initiative at the Sunshine Coast/Kabi Kabi Country. She has worked and volunteered with organisations such as Griffith University Art Museum, Outer Space, KEPK art space, Boxcopy, and the Institute of Modern Art. Sharna holds a Doctor of Visual Art from the Queensland College of Art and Design, Griffith University for her thesis ‘Vestiges of Self: Self-Portraiture in the Age of the Embodied, Decentred Subject’. Her practice and curatorial interests span themes of liminality and transformation – specifically in relation to self/body – with a deep concern with materiality, embodied experiences, and conceptual meaning.
