About this event

  • 7 hours

Visa status can make it difficult for those who experience family violence to seek help or leave their partner. Learn to identify the risk factors and relevant legal issues faced by women on temporary and migration visas and how you can respond appropriately. The Women on Temporary Visas, Family Violence and the Law training will provide you with information and practical strategies to better support women experiencing family violence.

Who should attend?

This training is best suited for generalist community legal sector lawyers who want to enhance their practice supporting clients on temporary and migration visas that are at risk or experiencing family violence.

In person training

Thursday 9 May 9:30am - 4:30pm

At the end of training you will:

  • Understand experiences of women on temporary and migrant visas impacted by family violence and barriers they face
  • Identify migration issues and understand timeframes under relevant legislation that may impact your client
  • Gain a broad overview of the family violence provisions in the Migration Act 1958 (Cth) and intersections with the Family Violence Protection Act 2008 (Vic)
  • Understand how to navigate conversations about family violence and visa status in a client-centred, trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approach
  • Build your confidence to identify intersecting legal issues, provide legal information, and identify appropriate referral and response options.
  • Understand the role of a specialist migration lawyer and how you can collaborate effectively
