This year, We Rise invites you into a conversation about generosity, courage, and the ripple effect of showing up for others. With the 2026 International Women’s Day theme “Give to Gain”, we’re exploring how giving our knowledge, our support, our lived experience, and our voice creates stronger, more connected communities and how every act of giving expands what we gain in return.

We’re honoured to welcome Alyssia Kennedy, 2026 Tasmanian Young Australian of the Year and founder of Upturned Tasmania.....

Alyssia Kennedy | 2026 Tasmanian Young Australian of the Year

Life Skills Educator | Founder of Upturned Tasmania | Advocate for Youth Empowerment

Alyssia Kennedy is a young Tasmanian leader transforming the way communities prepare their young people for adulthood. Named the 2026 Tasmanian Young Australian of the Year, she has become a powerful voice for practical education, empowerment, and community‑driven change.

After leaving school, Alyssia realised she had strong academic results but lacked the everyday life skills needed to navigate adulthood - budgeting, bills, tax, car expenses, and the confidence to make informed decisions. Instead of accepting that gap, she turned her lived experience into a mission. She founded Upturned Tasmania and its flagship initiative, the Life After School program, now delivered in schools and youth groups across the state. Her workshops equip young people with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to thrive beyond the classroom.

Her work has been recognised nationally. In 2025, Alyssia was selected as an ABC Trailblazer, highlighting her as one of regional Australia’s most innovative young changemakers and giving her the opportunity to present her ideas to policymakers in Canberra.

At the heart of Alyssia’s leadership is a simple but profound belief: when we lift others, we all rise. This ethos is woven through every Upturned Tasmania program, from life‑skills education to community‑informed project development, event planning, and support for local organisations. Her work strengthens not only individual young people but the communities they belong to.

Alyssia has transformed her own challenges into a movement that equips young Tasmanians with the life skills they need to thrive. Her story is a powerful reminder that when we give what we once needed, we create change that outlives us.

This event is a celebration of women who lift, lead, and learn together. It’s a space to be inspired, to connect, and to remember that when women rise, communities rise with them.
