UWA Law School Online CPD Series: International Intellectual Property Law - Professor Michael Blakeney

About this Event

This presentation looks at the evolution of the World Trade Organization Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and its impact upon Australian intellectual property law. It examines the various efforts made to update TRIPS, particularly in relation to access to medicines and to genetic resources. Also considered are the impacts of the bilateral and multilateral intellectual property agreements which Australia has entered into and it looks at the Anti-counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). Finally, the presentation surveys the treaties on traditional knowledge, traditional cultural expressions and genetic resources currently being negotiated at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

About the presenter

Michael Blakeney is Professor of Law at the University of Western Australia and Visiting Professor in IP at Queen Mary, University of London and the University of Ferrara. where he is Co-director of the Queen Mary Intellectual Property Research Institute. Australia and the UK and formerly worked in the Asia Pacific Bureau of the World Intellectual Property Organization. He is an arbitrator with the International Court of Arbitration.

Professor Blakeney has advised the Asian Development Bank, Consulting Group for International Agricultural Research, European Commission (EC), European Patent Office, Food and Agricultural Organization, World Intellectual Property Organization and a number of university and public research institutes on intellectual property management.

He has directed EC projects concerned with the establishment of an IP infrastructure in a number of new EU Member States and EU Applicant States. He has also directed and been a short-term expert in a number of projects to assist developing countries to become members of the World Trade Organization.
