Event description

Description

Innovation is increasingly understood as important for organisational success and even necessary for survival. But, organisations are inherently risk-averse, designed to drive collective action towards efficiency and consistency. So how in such contexts does innovation happen? An Innovation Champion is a key individual that has a significant role in overcoming organisational resistance to change.

The presence of an innovation champion has been found to enhance connectivity within and across organisations, facilitate access to resources, motivate project teams and generally, help to keep projects alive. In essence, Innovation Champions are critical drivers of innovation within organisations.

Courtney Molloy is a lecturer in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Newcastle and she will explain:

  • What it is that champions do to deliver such outcomes
  • How they facilitate innovative activity
  • What motivates this exceptional behaviour
  • How organisational context influences championing
  • How organisational leaders can identify and support champions
  • How Innovation Champions behave differently to others
  • How their awareness of organisational power and politics enables them to shepherd an innovation through the complexities of an organisational system.

A light lunch will be provided.
