Indigo Immersion: Dye Your Own Textile
Overview
Saturday 31 January
10.30 am – 12.30 pm
Artist Gianna Christella Hayes will lead you through the ancient art of indigo dyeing. You will transform a personal item with your own hands using a living tradition that continues to inspire artists and makers around the world. This immersive experience encourages experimentation, creativity, and reflection on colour, memory, and cultural heritage. Bring a personal item... such as a scarf, t-shirt, or fabric swatch to transform using tie-dye or dip method. You will make connections with plant-based traditions, ancestral knowledge, stories embedded in textile and leave with a one-of-a-kind, hand-dyed textile item.
Extra info: Please ensure your item is made from natural fibres (cotton, linen, hemp, silk, or wool), as these absorb the dye best and will give the most vibrant results. Items should be clean, pre-washed, and free of synthetic blends or finishes, as indigo does not bind well to polyester or other synthetics. Small to medium pieces work best for the vat allowing everyone to experiment fully. We have blank tote bags available for those who do not bring an item.
Bring with you:
- 1 personal textile item to dye (scarf, t-shirt, fabric swatch, etc.)
- Made from natural fibres only: cotton, linen, hemp, silk, or wool
- No synthetics (polyester, nylon, or blends won’t take the dye well)
- Item must be clean and pre-washed, with no fabric softener or finishes
- Small to medium-sized items work best for the dye vats
