This webinar will provide practical information and strategies focused on including students with complex communication needs.

Students with complex communication needs cannot meet their daily communication needs using speech alone, and therefore may use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). AAC refers to the tools that an individual uses to solve everyday communication strategies, and can include key word sign and gesture, communication books and speech generating devices.In this session, participants will be provided with an overview of AAC, and the importance of providing students with a robust language system. Key principles of implementing AAC will be discussed, with a focus on aided language stimulation (modelling). Participants will also be provided with practical strategies for supporting students who use AAC in an inclusive classroom, including the importance of peer training, developing communication supports for accessing the curriculum and setting up the classroom environment for communication success.This webinar will be presented by Amelia Edwards.Amelia is a Certified Practicing Speech Pathologist, with over 10 years of experience working with individuals with complex communication needs across a range of settings. Amelia is currently working as a senior speech pathologist at Two Way Street in Adelaide. In 2015, Amelia completed a PhD, which explored how parents of children on the autism spectrum make decisions about interventions for their children. Amelia has a particular interest in inclusive education and is passionate about supporting the inclusion of students who use augmentative and alternative communication. She is currently completing a Masters of Inclusive Education through QUT.Please ensure you enter your email address correctly when registering for this event.
