Event description

Description

Nettie Lodge present an 8 week course in illustrating a narrative which may include artist books, text artwork, graphic novels, poems, childrens books, fiction, travel diary, book covers and more! Its aimed at participants who may be interested in illustrating a narrative for the purpose of publication, or, to create an artist book , or to develop the necessary tools to create and illustrate an individual narrative text as a series of art works. The course is tailored to the specific style and needs of each participant.

The hands on course is focused on developing……

  • Perceptual, imaginative and technical skills to create a personal narrative project.
  • An understanding of how to dissect a narrative for illustration.
  • General technical and creative drawing skills for the purpose of illustration, including media such as watercolour, acrylic, collage, photomontage, pen and ink, mono printing and pencils. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with all the demonstrated techniques.
  • Developing illustration for individual projects with one on one feedback for each participant.

Pre Requisites:

Some previous art training experience is an advantage although not necessary.

What to Bring:

The participants will need to bring their own narrative text to the class that they wish to illustrate. (Eg: a series of quotes from a favourite writer, their own story, a favourite prose, a poem, a series of poems, a travel diary etc.). As the techniques that will be taught and demonstrated will vary, participants will be advised each week as to what materials will be required the following week. An A4 sketch book and 2B and 4B pencils will be required for every class.

Course Content:

For each class, home exercises to focus on particular skills and techniques, will be set, which will provide a “tool kit” of ideas.

. The first 3 classes will involve exercises in general drawing, both technical and creative, and a class critique of the homework. Each class will provide demonstrations of various illustration techniques. Each class will allow participants to experiment with all demonstrated mediums and techniques.

The final 5 classes will be used to develop the individual projects of the participants, during which an outline of how to complete individual projects will be provided on a one to one basis.

Course Outcomes:

The participants will have a knowledge of how to illustrate a text, a story or a narrative that best suits their personal projects. They will have gained experience in illustration techniques and descriptive drawing. They will have experimented with various mediums. They will have gained experience and knowledge in ideas generation, to pursue their individual creative projects. Though their final artwork may not be finished by the end of the course, it will be well on its way and the participants will have the tools and the confidence to conclude their projects alone.
