Join us as we explore the opportunities and constraints of adding hydrogen into Australia’s energy mix

About this event

Hosted by the Deakin School of Engineering, in collaboration with Hycel, this 90 minute interactive online session will aim to inform and engage the audience by providing:

  • An introduction to Hydrogen for energy and mobility, and why it is now being taken seriously as part of Australia’s future economic strategy
  • Real world examples presented by guests from Viva Energy and Hyzon Motors to understand the thinking and technology informing future investment
  • An opportunity for everyone to engage in a panel discussion and ask questions important to their area of practice

The session will open at 10am, followed by three short presentations, concluding with a 25min Q&A session.

Adam Fletcher

Adam is an environmental engineer (Deakin University) with more than 12 years of project management experience across the water industry, renewable energy and tertiary education sectors. Specialising in large, complex infrastructure projects, Adam oversaw design and delivery of the Waurn Ponds Microgrid, a 7 megawatt solar farm and battery storage system built in partnership with AusNet Services and Mondo Power. As Hycel’s Program Manager, Adam guides the strategic direction for Deakin University’s hydrogen initiatives, coordinating hydrogen research-industry projects, partnerships and business development and overseeing delivery of the Hycel Technology Hub, Australia’s first fuel cell R&D, training and testing facility.

Sandra Lau

With over 15 years in the resources industry in both mining and downstream oil and gas, Sandra has worked across five Australian states and two continents. With Bachelor degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Commerce (University of Melbourne) and a recently completed executive MBA at the Australian School of Graduate Management (UNSW), Sandra has held a variety of engineering, project and management roles. In her current strategic role as Viva Energy’s Alternative Fuels Manager, Sandra leads a team responsible for understanding changing consumer trends and future consumer mobility options, with a focus on opportunities in hydrogen in the transition to a lower carbon future. In 2019, Sandra was voted as Director of the Australian Hydrogen Council by her industry peers.

Simon Coburn

With diverse experience across engineering, technology and mobility, Simon has worked on significant projects in Australia, New Zealand and Europe. With a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering (UNSW) and Masters in Science (Cranfield), Business and Technology (UNSW) and Energy Systems (University of Melbourne), Simon has held a variety of design, installation, program and project management roles. In his current work as Head of Special Projects for Hyzon Motors Australia, Simon specialises in hydrogen project origination and financial and technical analysis of current and prospective projects, particularly in the hydrogen mobility space.
