Hurlers Charity Trivia Night

Hurlers Charity Round is an initiative supported by the Hurlstone Park Wanderers and is an opportunity for the club to come together to support a range of charities. Ours is a family orienteted club and our chosen charities focus on footballers and families. We thank you for your support.Hurlstone Park Wanderers are a community club, that promotes playing football in an inclusive manner, with respect for opponents, officials, and for the love of the game. Hurlstone Park Wanderers have over 1400 players forming 120 teams, with 84 teams from under 9’s to over 45’s and 36 team for the 6–8 Small Sided Football age groups.www.hurlstoneparkwanderers.com.auWho are the Hurlers ?The Hurlers is our Hurlstone Park Wanderers Over 35/4s football team, but do not be deceived by the fancy title. We are an aging, social team, but a little different. We have an eclectic mix of backgrounds and professions. Most of us are in our mid-40's, several are pushing 50 an a few well over. Though the Football part is important, it is not our only focus.Every week is themed (e.g. '70's shirt week’, ‘Family Day’, ‘Christmas in July', ‘Opposites Day’, ‘Ride to Football Day’, ‘Irish Day and ‘Mulled Wine Day’ to name a few); food, drink, a joke, poems, music and Player of the week awards are rostered, there is a large crèche of kids (with wives and girlfriends) on the sideline. What is Charity Day Round:In 2015 the Hurlers added a new Themed Round to the Roster – Charity Day Round. The U/16 Hurlerstone Park Boys team was seeking donations to help fund their entry and trip to the annual Kanga Cup tournament in Canberra.  We thought this was a worthy cause and arranged a team dinner, raffled and auctioned various game day items (such as match day positions, the captain of the day, right to take next penalty kick) and instigated a loose fine system to raise money. We raised money for the boys (who co-incidentally won the tournament). Our donation was more than half the total money raised by the team.In 2016 we wanted to challenge ourselves to make Charity Day Round bigger with the goal to double our efforts and broaden our charities. A target of raising $1,000 was set.A trivia night was arranged at Petersham Bowling Club in addition to the series of match day activities and ‘fines’.  Team members donated both cash and a range of items to raffle and auction. Pink socks were worn to support #pullupyoursocks.Overall, Charity Day 2016 raised over $3,000 for our chosen charities. In 2017, with the support of the Hurlstone Park Wanderers Committee and club (with a few teams from Leichhardt Saints and Marrickville Red Devils) joining in as well, we had over  50 teams, 1100 players, coaches and managers don pink socks and a few teams Pink Jerseys. CDSFA was a sea of pink and Trivia Night grew to over 120 attendees. In total we raised over $20,500.The Hurlers also auctioned off a headshave and raised an additional $4,000 in July 2017, when 7 Hurlers shaved their heads for DoitforCancer.Hurlers 2018 CharitiesWe are hoping that in 2018 we can raise even more money for our charities. As the Hurlers are a family football team, The Hurlers Charity Day goal is to support a range of charities with a focus footballers and families. It is proposed that monies raised will be split mainly among:The PararoosAustralian Paralympic TeamJohn Moriaty FootballSupport for Aboriginal Communities through football developmentMcGrath Foundation- Raises money to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia as well as to increase breast cancer awareness in young people.DT38 FoundationRaises testicular cancer awareness through education and opportunities.Heartbeat of Footballaims to promote healthy hearts in sport via player education, the minimization of health risks and the installation of defibrillators on all sporting fields around the country.Do It For Canceris a Cancer Council community fundraising initiative that supports people to fundraise any way they like. Money raised goes towards  research, prevention and support services across Australia.Zero Childhood Canceruniquely brings together all major Australian clinical and research groups working in childhood cancer to offer Australia’s first ever personalized medicine program for children with high-risk or relapsed cancer.
