PUBLIC INTEREST DESIGN MASTERCLASS

BRYAN BELL (FOUNDER DESIGN CORPS)

The Public Interest Design Masterclass offered for the first time in Australia will provide training on how designers can expand their practices through working on a wide range of collaborative fee-based and pro bono projects with and for diverse community groups.

The masterclass will include an overview of Public Interest Design (PID), interactive training of the SEED (Social–Economic–Environmental–Design) process and a PID project planning workshop.

Bryan Bell (USA)

Bell is the founder of Design Corps, founder of the Public Interest Design Institute, and a co-founder of Social, Economic and Environmental Design (SEED) Network, USA. He is also an Associate Professor, NC State University.

Bell has lectured at numerous leading schools in the USA including the Rural Studio with Samuel Mockbee. Bell has supervised the ‘Structures for Inclusion’ lecture series for ten years which presents best practices in community-based design He has received an AIA National Honor Award in Collaborative Practice. His work has been exhibited in the Venice Biennale and the Cooper Hewitt Museum Triennial. He was a Harvard Loeb Fellow in 2010-11 and a co-recipient of the 2011 AIA Latrobe Prize which is focused on public interest design.

ACCESSIBLITY AND PARKING

The event will be held at the Koorie Heritage Trust, which is on level 3 of the Yarra building, Federation Square. Wheelchair access to level 3 is via a lift in the Yarra building lobby. Once on level 3, all rooms in Koorie Heritage Trust have disability access. There is an all gender wheelchair accessible toilet available.

Federation Square has its own multi-level car park, which is accessible from Russell Street or Batman Ave (Exhibition Street extension – City Link). The Federation Square Car Park is open 24hrs and has accessible spaces located next to the lift on each level.

The Koorie Heritage Trust is well serviced by public transport including trams along Swanston Street/St Kilda Road and Flinders Street. It is also located in close proximity to Flinders Street Station. There is also a taxi rank outside Flinders Street Station
