Honours Skills-based Program: Thesis Structures and Introductions

The Learning Advisers at ANU Academic Skills work with students to develop the key academic skills and communication strategies that are foundational to all academic activity. We work with students from first year undergraduate to final year Phd, by conducting workshops, one to one appointments and a variety of self help online resources.

Workshop blurb:
How do you logically weave together the separate parts of your thesis (the individual chapters or articles) to develop your overall argument that addresses the research question or problem? This workshop offers structural techniques to create a clear narrative and argument for the thesis as a whole. We then focus on the introduction given its importance for situating your study within your field/discipline, introducing the study’s key themes, concepts, issues and arguments, and providing readers with a ‘road map’ for how you will go about connecting these in developing your overall message in the thesis’ various chapters. We analyse the key features of introductions, how to structure them, and strategies for writing effectively.
Academic Skills in collaboration with ANUSA is offering Honour students workshops on planning your Honours year and writing your thesis in 2020.
