Event description
Home Stretch WA Trial would like input and feedback into developing a Housing Subsidy for care leavers that will be tested in the WA Trial.

About this event

Home Stretch WA Trial

The Home Stretch WA Trial is developing and testing an enhanced support system for young people transitioning from out-of-home care, providing them with additional support and resources from 18 years to when they turn 21 years of age. The Trial will improve care leavers’ access to housing, health, education, training and employment through the provision of practical one-on-one assistance.

One of the critical elements of the trial is to support young people to find and maintain safe and stable housing, and to support young people to have some flexibility and choice in their living arrangements. This support will include 1:1 assistance from the Transition Coach, and also financial support to sustain housing through payment of a subsidy.

Join Us in Developing a Housing Subsidy Prototype

The Home Stretch WA Team, with guidance from the Youth Advisory Group, have been working on developing a prototype subsidy that we will test as part of the Home Stretch Trial. We would like to take you on a walk through our thinking, and invite you to contribute and critique the prototype we have developed.

The Housing Subsidy prototype includes some of the process and practice that young people will experience in accessing the subsidy, the principles that underpin and govern the provision of a subsidy and the outcomes we hope to see.

Further Information about housing through the Home Stretch Trial.

Under the Home Stretch WA Trial, young people and caregivers have the option to continue their stable living arrangements up to the time a young person reaches the age of the 21. While there will be a continuation of payments and support to foster and family carers, there is also an expectation that a young person will contribute to their living expenses from their independent income [Centrelink, employment etc.]. These agreements have been named 'Staying On' agreements and have been developed and tested as part of the trial.

Service providers and foster carers interviewed during the co-design identified that the negotiation of extensions to living arrangements was a sensitive touch point in the model and would require further co-design work.

Home Stretch WA Transition Coaches, as part of their support and advocacy role, assist young people to develop agreements between them, their foster or family carers and the Department of Communities that establish the expectations, payments and conditions of staying on in a stable living arrangement until they are ready to leave or up to the age of 21.

Home Stretch WA Transition Coaches will also broker and negotiate the payment of housing support subsidies for young people leaving residential care and those young people who do not wish to, or are unable to continue their living arrangements with a foster or family carer.
