About this event

Gardiners Creek (Kooyongkoot) is a significant waterway within Stonnington that extends for approximately 8.7km from its junction with the Yarra River in Kooyong through to Warrigal Road, Glen Iris. It provides an important wildlife corridor as well as open space, recreation hubs, Indigenous heritage and public transport links.

Beginning with its Traditional Custodians, the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung peoples of the East Kulin nation, it continues to support a variety of users, as is typical of a city creek corridor with a strong connection to the local community.

Dr Gary Presland will draw on his extensive knowledge as an archaeologist and historian to compare how Traditional Custodians and European settlers have used Gardiners Creek (KooyongKoot).

Gary is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria and an Honorary Associate of Museums Victoria. He is the author of the award-winning book, The Place for a Village: How Nature Has Shaped the City of Melbourne (2009).

This talk is presented as part of the National Trust’s Australian Heritage Festival 2024.
