Heritage Festival: Learn to transcribe with Amplify

Oral histories are an important way of preserving the knowledge and experiences of our community. This session will teach you the skills to use Amplify to transcribe oral histories and become a digital volunteer.

In this session Local Studies staff will introduce you to Amplify, a platform designed to deliver audio collections from cultural institutions alongside automatically generated transcripts. As the transcripts are not always perfect, they can be edited by digital volunteers to improve their accuracy and enrich the oral histories. We will show you how to create an account, search for collections or topics of interest and teach you the skills to start transcribing.

Please note: If you would like to try transcribing, please bring your own headphones or earbuds to connect to the computer. You may also bring your own laptop.

About Local Studies:

Our Local Studies Team support the preservation and promotion of the Georges River Council through the research and collection of local historical materials such as maps, photographs and newspapers to gain a deeper understanding of our history, culture, and community.

About Amplify:

Amplify delivers audio material from a number of cultural institutions including libraries and museums across Australia. These oral histories, many of which have been preserved digitally from their original format, are being delivered online for the first time, paired with machine-generated transcripts. Here you can explore hours of fascinating interviews that capture Australian life, people and history. You can also help enrich these important cultural documents by correcting any errors in the transcripts you may find as you listen along.
