Sydney High School teacher and local historian Vasilis Vasilas will present a short history of Marrickville’s Greek community, while local Dina Fakas cooks the Greek delicacy, spanakopita.

The Greek migration and settlement story and Marrickville are synonymous to the success of Australian multiculturalism. One aspect of the Greek migrant generation’s integration into the broader Australian community is the impact of Greek cuisine on the Australian diet and tastes. Foods like spanakopita (spinach pie) may have been an important link for migrants to their homeland, Greece, but also a transformative link of acceptance in their adopted homeland Australia.
