Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used ubiquitously to address complex business challenges like fraud, customer support, data analysis and personalisation. AI can create opportunities to unlock new efficiencies, increase productivity and decrease costs. It can also offer well-considered decision-making, risk mitigation, forecasting, logistics optimisation and insights to better understand your customer.

As intelligent systems are increasingly integrated into every aspect of business operations, existing propositions and values are being challenged. A global study conducted by Accenture involving 1,500 C-Suite executives found that eighty-four percent say they will not achieve company growth objectives without AI.

Businesses that are prepared to harness the value of intelligent technologies such as AI are well positioned to bring to market agile and innovation business models. So understanding the impact and potential of AI is fast becoming a fundamental leadership requirement.

Introducing our panelists and chair:

Mohadeseh Ganji, Head of Data Science, ANZ Bank

Moha Ganji is a PhD qualified award-winning AI and data science leader with a passion for bringing people, data and technology together to drive strong business and customer outcomes. She has a successful track record in building and leading cross functional high performing analytics teams, developing data and AI capability and driving and executing data strategy across finance, retail, and energy industries.

Moha's influence and contribution to the industry have been recognised through multiple awards including women leading tech award by B&T and Google in 2020 and ranked 5th (1st woman) among top 25 analytics leaders of Australia by Institute of Analytics Professionals Australia (IAPA) in 2019.

Moha holds an honorary position at The University of Melbourne and also serves as advisory committee member for Institute of Analytics Professionals Australia. She is currently head of data science at ANZ bank setting and executing data strategy in the home loans business.

Michael Park, Partner, Allens

Michael Park is a Partner at international law firm Allens, with over 25 years’ experience in technology, telecommunications and data governance and regulation. Last year he was awarded the IT Lawyer of the Year in Melbourne by Best Lawyers. He has worked with a number of private and public sector clients on successfully implementing AI solutions, including advising on risk and regulatory compliance issues. Michael contributed to the Committee for Melbourne's recent report on The Future of Artificial Intelligence in Australia. He is especially interested in the need to put in place an appropriate governance framework so that the use of AI meets community expectations for fairness and transparency, while also allowing us to unlock the benefits of AI.

Professor Liz Sonenberg, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Digital and Data), University of Melbourne

Liz Sonenberg is a Professor of Information Systems at the University of Melbourne. She holds the Chancellery roles of Pro Vice Chancellor Research Systems and Pro Vice Chancellor Digital & Data, and is active in teaching and research in the Melbourne School of Engineering and Information Technology. Across these roles her responsibilities include oversight of the maturing of the array of business systems that support the University research enterprise, and guiding the University’s strategic digital and data governance and policies. Liz is a member of the Advisory Board of AI Magazine, and also a member of the Standing Committee of the One Hundred Year Study on Artificial Intelligence (AI100). Her currently active research projects include “Deception in AI” and “Explanation in AI”.

Professor Tim Baldwin, Computing and Information Systems, University of Melbourne

Tim Baldwin is a Melbourne Laureate Professor in the School of Computing and Information Systems, The University of Melbourne, and also Director of the ARC Centre for Cognitive Computing in Medical Technologies and Vice President of the Association for Computational Linguistics. His primary research focus is on natural language processing (NLP), including social media analytics, deep learning, and computational social science.

Prior to joining the University , he was a Senior Research Engineer at the Center for the Study of Language and Information, Stanford University. His research has been funded by organisations including the Australian Research Council, Google, Microsoft, Xerox, ByteDance, SEEK, NTT, and Fujitsu, and has been featured in MIT Tech Review, IEEE Spectrum, The Times, ABC News, The Age/Sydney Morning Herald, Australian Financial Review, and The Australian. He is the author of over 400 peer-reviewed publications across diverse topics in natural language processing and AI, with over 16,000 citations and an h-index of 60 (Google Scholar), in addition to being an IBM Fellow, ARC Future Fellow, and the recipient of a number of best paper awards at top conferences.

Greg Cameron (Chair), Enterprise Senior Fellow, AI Platform, University of Melbourne

Greg Cameron is an Enterprise Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne. He is responsible for assisting the development of the University’s strategy and industry engagement for its AI research associated with the University’s AI Sector Platform.

Prior to commencing his current position, he was the Business Development Executive at IBM Research Australia and Software Client Leader at IBM Australia. He has also held management and business development roles with Hewlett Packard , Compaq Computers and Digital Equipment Corporation.

Greg completed a BEng (Manufacturing) at Swinburne Institute of Technology and Master of Business Administration at Swinburne University of Technology.
