Description

Starting in Putney Park and as the walk meanders westward along the banks of the Parramatta River, learn about natural features, local history and indigenous connection to place along this picturesque section of the Parramatta River. You will learn about the early settlers to the area, grand houses of former years and the friendship of Bennelong and James Squire. Hear about the trials, tribulations and triumphs the local shipbuilding trades experienced on the river of ther the years, including 'Gretel' Australia's first America's Cup challenger, other Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race champions, the WWII war craft building effort and the burning of the sister ships - the 'Braeside' and the 'Burnside'. Discover how Putney has successfully transformed itself over the past century from an area once known as "Struggletown" to the suburb it is today.

Date: Saturday 15 June 2019

Time: Session 1: 10am – 12pm (arrive 9.45am).

Location: Putney Park, Putney.

Address: Pellisier Rd, Putney

Parking: Limited parking available onsite or in local surrounding streets.

Meeting Point: On the open grass area nearest to the water feature at the children's playground with the enclosed slide. This walk will start and finish in the same location.

Suitability:

  • Easy grade walk suitable for adults, seniors and/or families with primary or high school aged children who are competent walkers.
  • Walk distance is approximately 3km so a basic level of fitness and mobility is required.
  • This walk is conducted on a combination of paths and bushtracks and including some occasional uneven ground, steep slopes, steps and road crossings.
  • This walk is stroller/pram friendly, however there will be some grass sections throughout the walk.
  • All children must be accompanied by a parent/carer.
  • No dogs or pets.
  • No smoking.

Equipment: Please bring your own water, water bottle, sunscreen and insect repellent.

Clothing: Must be suitable for physical activity. Hats must be worn. Bring a jacket in the event of inclement weather.

Footwear: Shoes must be enclosed, have a non-slip sole and suitable for physical activity. Thongs, sandals and open toed shoes are not permitted.
