Welcome to the Initial Assessment and Referral (IAR) Training registration page.

Background

The Initial Assessment and Referral Guidance and Decision Support Tool (IAR-DST) is a national initiative from the Department of Health and Aged Care on establishing effective systems for the initial assessment and referral of individuals presenting with mental health conditions in primary health care settings by supporting GP's and other clinicians to determine the most appropriate level of care for a person seeking mental health support.

  • A $300 payment is available for eligible GPs who complete the two-hour training.
  • GP CPD Hours: This training is an approved CPD activity for RACGP / ACRRM members.

Audience: GP/GP registrars involved in the mental health assessment and referral process, practicing within and around the Greater Bendigo area (within the Murry PHN catchment).

The IAR training will run for two hours and topics focus on:

  • Introduction to IAR and the development of the National Guidance
  • Orientation to the domains, levels of care, and DST
  • Clinical judgement and supported decision-making
  • Application of the IAR in assessment and intake settings (practical activity using a case vignette)
  • Local resources and updates on mental health referral processes

Part one of the workshop provides the background and orientation to stepped care, the IAR process, and the DST. In part two of the workshop, participants engage in practical activity focusing on applying the IAR-DST to the prepared scenario.

By the end of the training GP’s/GP Registrars will be able to:

  • Describe the development process of the Initial Assessment and Referral Initiative.
  • Describe the 8 Initial Assessment Domains of the Decision Support Tool.
  • Define the 5 levels of care (LOC)and provide examples of mental health services that belong to each level of care.
  • Apply the IAR Guidance to use the decision support tool to generate a recommended level of care.
  • Apply the supported decision-making strategies to involve the patient in referral decision-making.

Speakers:

Dr Remon Eskander(MBBCH, AMC, FRACGP, Registered Focus Psychology Strategies Provider, Mental Health Certificate, Dermatology Certificate). Remon is a general practitioner in Central Victoria with a special interest and vast experience in managing chronic conditions including mental health.

Louise Scheidl ,Intial Assessment and Referral Training and Support Officer, Murray PHN. Louise is an Occupational Therapist with over 35 years' experience working across a variety of Mental Health service levels.

Workshop Details:

  • Thursday 3 August. Registrations from 6.15pm. Dinner served at 6.30pm sharp.
  • Workshop time: 6.30pm-9pm
  • Dinner and non-alcoholic beverages provided. Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements.
  • Participants required to have access to their own device (smart phone, tablet, laptop) with Wi-Fi capability to access online sites.

GP CPD Hours: For General Practitioners this activity has been approved for the following hours and types:

  • RACGP members that complete the IAR training are entitled to 2 CPD hours (1 Reviewing Performance hour and 1 Educational Activities hour)
  • ACRRM members that complete the IAR training are entitled to 2 CPD hours (1 Reviewing Performance hour and 1 Educational Activities hour).

Please note, full participation in the 2-hour workshop is required to be issued CPD hours.

GP Reimbursement: A one-off reimbursement of $300 is available for GP's/ GP Registrars on completion of the training, unless already being paid for their time by a Commonwealth funded service (e.g., Adult Mental Health Centers or Aboriginal Medical Services). Please note, full participation in the 2-hour workshop is required to be issued payment. Details for reimbursement will be emailed post workshop.
