Event description

Description

Global Security PLuS brings together security experts from Australia, the US, and the UK for this not-to-be-missed seminar on new approaches to “Grey Zone” threats. From biodefence in the age of precision gene editing, and emerging threats such as Novichok, to cybersecurity, information warfare, and cross-disciplinary approaches to threat detection, this event explores the challenges of the ever-expanding “Grey Zone" and its increasing importance as a focus of threat mitigation for governments and industry around the world.

Registration is free, but places are limited. The 1-day programme will be presented in Canberra on September 12th, after a presentation in Sydney on September 11th.

Background

Traditionally, approaches to mitigating global security risks have taken a binary approach in terms of threat and risk - a model decidedly unsuited to ambiguity. The “Grey Zone” (also referred to as “Hybrid Warfare”) is an area of uncertainty that falls outside binary definitions of war and peace. It involves an array of unconventional yet militaristic tools that may be used to coerce without provoking a military response, including cyberwarfare, covert biowarfare, the weaponisation of information, and more subtle threats such as economic manipulation. Due to rapid advances in technology, the convergence of technological platforms, and a widening array of modes, the grey zone is only becoming larger.

About Global Security PLuS

Launched in 2017, the initiative’s mission is to foster collaboration between security experts from three allied countries and enhance global security by preventing, detecting, and mitigating global security threats.
