About Emily Hunt

Emily Hunt creates ornamental, figurative ceramics. Her current research concentrates on the figure of the marionette as a form of human simulacra. In her figurines, she questions the possibility of artificial intelligence and non-human intelligence. She explores magical concepts such as the homunculus, the poppet, and ancient automata to give voice to the uncanny, the weird, and ‘eerie animation’.

Her research draws parallels between grotesque ornamentation and symbols found in magical traditions. Within her practice of etching, she has a deep interest in the earliest representations of female witches in German Renaissance print culture.

Her project, while in Sydney, will focus on occult and magical artists, musicians, and writers from Australia. Through the act of walking, she will construct a visual map of numinous locations throughout Sydney.
