About this event

This series of webinars addresses what is known at present about Generative Artificial intelligence (genAI), implications for learning, teaching and assessment and how such technologies might transform higher education into the future.

The emergence of genAl is shifting research practices in new and unforeseen ways. For those who conduct research and train researchers, it presents a conundrum: how to take advantage of its affordances while guarding against poor use or even misuse? This webinar explores the potential and pitfalls of genAI with respect to research and research training. Our panellists draw from across disciplines to share their insights on what researchers and research students need to know.

Join our panellists for some thought-provoking discussions

Professor Matt Kuperholz is an Adjunct Professor with Deakin Business School and an artificial intelligence scientist and advisor with over 30 years experience in the field. He is formally trained in actuarial science and computer science. Matt is thrilled to have been recognised as a leader in his field and is considered one of Australia's leading AI scientists.

Dr Nitya Phillipson is co-convenor of the research integrity SIG for the Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) and has extensive experience in managing research ethics and integrity and high-profile investigations into research misconduct. Nitya is interested in the human side of research integrity and the exciting advancements in open sciences, AI ethics and sustainable research practices.

Dr Simon Knight is Director the University of Technology Sydney, Centre for Research on Education in a Digital Society (UTS:CREDS), previous co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Learning Analytics, and recent Australian Research Council, Discovery Early Career Award Fellowship (ARC DECRA). He has developed approaches to design learning analytics, particularly for writing. His recent work investigates how people learn to ethically navigate uncertainty, disagreement, and evidence.

Professor Justin Zobel is a Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor in the School of Computing and Information Systems and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Graduate and International Research), in which role he oversees the University’s graduate research training and international research partnerships. In the research community, Professor Zobel is best known for his role in the development of algorithms for efficient web search and for his contributions to robust research methodologies, and is the author of three highly regarded textbooks on graduate study and research practice.

Professor Margaret Bearman (facilitator) is a Research Professor in the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE). She focuses on higher and professional education with interests in assessment design, feedback and education in a digital world.

Facilitated by Professor Margaret Bearman, CRADLE and with an introduction from Professor Peter Coaldrake AO, Chief Commissioner, TEQSA.
