Frontend Engineering Sydney

Canva

We’re excited to be hosting the first in our series of regular events that aims to support the rapidly growing frontend engineering community here in Sydney.
We’ll be putting a spotlight on the best frontend engineering practices from the world’s leading companies, and giving like-minded people at both small startups and big companies an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas over some great food and drinks.
All proceeds from this event will be donated to Nodegirls, an organisation that supports women who want to learn to code.
To kick things off we have two speakers with a wealth of experience both here and abroad, who will be talking about their experience and learnings while practising frontend engineering at tiny startups and tech behemoths.

Dave Hearnden – Apples falling from Bodhi trees Canva's CTO will be dusting off a few domains of computer science that don't get much attention these days, but which have a transformative effect on how you think about UI engineering. These techniques are the perfect complement to the modern resurgence in functional, declarative and reactive principles on the frontend.
Dave completed a PhD that pioneered methods for incremental program execution before spending 5 years working at Google. There he was a tech lead on Google Wave – working on its groundbreaking OT protocol for collaborative editing – then revived the Google Maps SDK for Android and led the Google Maps SDK for iOS. He's now CTO at Canva where he’s been architecting the full stack and scaling the team to 50 engineers during a wild 4 year ride.

Adam Schuck – From Frontend to Full-Stack After having seismic impact at both early-stage startups and well-established companies like Google, Adam will be sharing the ways in which his history with frontend engineering have shaped his journey as an engineer and tech leader.
Adam Schuck is cofounder and VP of Technology at ambitious Sydney-based AI/NLP startup Lexy. There he applies everything he learned as engineering site lead for Twitter’s New York office and also from his time at Google where he lead the frontend engineering team on Google Wave and won an EMG award for his work on Google Maps. He also draws extensive knowledge from his startup adventures with Julpan and Zeetings.
