Description

In partnership with South East Local Land Services and the ACT Regional Landcare Facilitator we are pleased to present a two day workshop, From the Ground Up - Understanding Soils. Soil is the most valuable natural asset on your farm. This workshop is all about helping you appreciate your soils as an asset, how to protect soils, keep them healthy and read your landscape for better land management.

Soil health and fertility are fundamental to getting the most from your land. Are some soils really fragile and need building up? What options are there for managing soil fertility? Is pH a consideration when thinking about your soil? Come along and find out the answers to these questions and ask many more at the soils workshop.

Day One: Saturday 2 September 2017

- Healthy landscapes and healthy soils

- Soil and land capability, reading your landscape

- Simple tools for assessing healthy soils (field/paddock activity)

- Soil sampling - how to take samples that will be useful

Day Two: Saturday 21 October 2017

- Your soil tests, what do the numbers mean?

- Making decisions, what to consider and what options are available.

The workshop will be led by Jo Powell, Senior Agricultural Advisor for the South East Local Land Services based in Cooma. Jo started her career on the Monaro (the region around Cooma) with the then NSW Agriculture Department running a 7 year research project investigating "the effects of increased soil fertility and grazing management on native pasture production and biodiversity”. She has post graduate qualifications in sustainable agriculture and land rehabilitation and is currently completing a Masters of Natural Resource Management. Her agricultural interests are in pasture legume production constraints, herbicide resistance in weeds, resilience in pasture systems and new invasive plant species. In her current role as a Pastures Agronomist she works with farmers on agricultural and sustainable land management issues.

The two field days cost $128.08 and includes the cost of one soil sample, plus lunch and morning tea for up to two people per farm. A second soil sample can be purchased at the time of registration for $125.00. The Eventbrite fees are incuded in the cost of the field day and soil sample.

South East Local Land Services are offering participants an additional FREE soil sample for each soil sample purchased, up to two free soil test per farm.

The soil sample collection point is Bungendore, all soil samples and equipment must be returned by the 18 September so they can be analysed by 21 October.

This event is not suitable for children and please leave your dogs at home.

Refunds are only available up until one week prior to the first field day. You need to contact us to arrange a refund.

This event is subsidised by the Australian Government, South East Local Land Services and the ACT Regional Landcare Facilitator.

To register for this field day online you need to pay using credit card. You need to purchase an additional soil test if you want one at the time of booking.
