Do I need to have any prior dance experience?

NO - Forró Roots is for everyone and all dance experience levels. Our instructors will take you from introductory steps and movements through to sophisticated and intricate steps that you can use to interpret different musical rhythms.

NO - we will adjust the class to the attendees on any night. There are 2 roles - leader and follower. More experienced dancers can both lead and follow, but we recommend you learn to do one role well first.

Can I take photos or video of the class?

Please ask permission from our forró instructors to record and share the dance classes. The instructor will check that the class is comfortable in it being recorded and shared appropriately.

What about birthday Rodas ?

YES - Photos and video recording are permitted for the birthday Roda! Brazilians celebrate birthdays through a birthday dance as a Roda - the person who is celebrating their birthday stays in the middle to dance with everyone, and dancers form a circle around them waiting for their turn to dance!

How do the classes run?

In general, we start with 2 freestyle dances where you practice what you have already learnt. We do a quick warm-up , then start the lesson for the evening. We will leave 10 mins at the end of the class purely for practice that both your mind and body need. Our instructors are there to assist you.

About Forró Roots

In the world of Brazilian dance, if Samba is the queen then Forró is the king!

Forró is a partner dance with a number of styles from different regions in Brazil. The two most prominent styles are Universitário which is led mainly with hands, and Roots which is led mainly with body and leg movements.

Forró Roots is a new style of forró that began at forró events in Itaúnas/ES around the 2010s. It introduces intrinsic and complex leg movements, mostly originating and modified from Tango and Samba de Gafieira. It is danced to older style and traditional forró songs that go back to Rootstock forró festivals and similar events.

Roots style has subtle leads, dynamic and playful movements, and is generally danced to faster forró music. Maintaining body connection with your partner & holding your balance is a vital aspect - akin to Tango and Samba de Gafieira.

MAIN Forró Roots class

This is a long lesson with two parts and a break in the middle for practice. In the first part we will generally be learning a dance technique that is important to a move or sequence. In the second we will add footwork and postural aspects to complete a move or sequence - dancing from slower to very fast tempos
