Event description

Description

Inspired by the ABC documentary series “Changing Minds: The Inside Story”, which follows patients in the Mental Health Unit of Campbelltown Hospital, Foolz: Imperturbable Logic of the Fool follows the lives of young patients who are at risk of developing mental illness.

This performance will star Flinders University Drama Centre graduates and will be directed by acclaimed French actress and director Zabou Breitman.

You are invited to this free production on behalf of Flinders University and the Embassy of France in Australia.

A note from the Director, Zabou Breitman:

The term “imperturbable logic of the fool” comes from a phrase in a novel by Lydie Salvayre, which I adapted in my theatre production: The Company of Spectres.

For a long time this term resonated with me. And, then my mind got so focused and inspired, that the phrase became an obsession; and that obsession, ultimately, became a show.

I want to explore what we mean by the concept of “madness”; the crossroads of absurdity, poetry and unreason.

This show will be a collage of these concepts and, as I did in the production People after Raymond Depardon, an assembly largely inspired by documentaries; infused with texts by Shakespeare, Chekhov, Racine, Kafka, Lewis Carroll, Gogol and others.

The idea behind “Foolz” is not so much a patchwork, as a weave so tight that we cannot distinguish the sources, while recognising furtively some traditional voices.

There will be text, but the “crazy” that we are has a body, and it is arrhythmias and losses of equilibrium which will be the object of prominent physical work during the performance (through duets, choreographed duets and trios).

This show is also inspired by the work of visual artist Liu Bolin, whose chameleon like body disappears against walls, in nature and across the shelving of supermarkets.

The actors are very young and carry within themselves, and despite themselves, a certain regret for leaving behind the follies of their childhood. They learn how to carry themselves like reasonable adults. They are experimenting, still stammering, with the energy of immortality.
