Event description
A Meter Apart : Intimate performances for deep listening.

About this Event

Fish Slappa is the musical project of Darwin’s own Evan Keith. Fish Slappa’s music spans from IDM to ambient to noise and other categories but retains a focus on musical process throughout. Fish Slappa has released various musical projects, albums, EPs, and process-based works over the best part of the last decade in one form or another, in addition to a number of sporadic gigs in Darwin, Melbourne, and more recently in cyberspace. Fish Slappa’s music tends to defy easy categorisation, switching from one sound to another in line with the different processes behind every release and performance, but the one constant is a DIY method. Fish Slappa’s music places an emphasis on the creation of music from its barest essentials, and tends to be made on only a single computer or device, often synthesised from scratch.

Fish Slappa’s performance will adhere to the overarching technologically minimalist philosophy behind Fish Slappa’s music – it will be played on a single laptop and will consist only of sounds created on that very device. In keeping with the deep listening theme of the event, the performance will, by way of its austere aesthetic, allow the listener the greatest possible to focus on the details of sound. Since the performance will only use sounds from the laptop, the listener will be treated to a soundscape that is wholly the work of the artist. Expect a sound evocative of Tim Hecker, Vladislav Delay, and of course Pauline Oliveros.

With a strictly limited number of people in the audience, a complete ban on all devices, and with the chairs a meter apart, you are left alone, with no distractions, to fully immerse in the performance.

3.30pm Doors open. Come early and enjoy a drink and a chat.

4.00pm Doors close and the performance begins.

5.00pm Enjoy another drink and discuss your experience with the artist.

5.30pm Event ends.

Bookings are essential!
