Firearms Safety Course

Join SSAA Victoria for an informative and engaging Firearms Safety Course!

This in-person event is designed to equip participants with essential knowledge and skills to ensure safe handling and operation of firearms, and is approved by Victoria Police for longarm licence applications

Time: 6:00 PM (Australian Eastern Standard Time)

Location: Portland RSL Sub Branch, 21 Percy Street, Portland VIC 3305

During this course, our experienced and qualified instructors will cover a range of topics including firearm information, firearm safety rules, firearm handling techniques, safe storage practices, and legal responsibilities. This course is suitable for anyone wishing to apply for a longarm licence in Victoria.

By attending this course, you will gain valuable insights and learn best practices to ensure the safety of yourself and those around you when handling firearms.

If you successfully complete this course, you will be issued a completion certificate. Ensure to keep this certificate as you will need to provide a copy when you submit your application.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to do the Firearms Safety Course again if I have previously held a firearms licence?

You will be required to do the Firearms Safety Course before you submit a new application: - even if you have previously held a firearms licence in Victoria, or interstate . - if you have had a licence cancelled. - if your previous licence expired more than 12 months ago.

Do I need to be a resident of Victoria to apply for a Firearms Licence?

You must be a resident of Victoria and be an Australian citizen or permanent resident. For full details regarding eligibility to apply for a firearm licence, visit the Victoria Police webpage here: https://www.police.vic.gov.au/eligibility-requirements.

Can my child do the Firearms Safety Course?

Yes, children aged between 12 and 18 can do the Firearms Safety Test. You must be aged between 12 and 18 years to apply for a junior licence, or, 18 years and over to apply for an adult licence.

Can SSAA membership be used as a genuine reason to hold a Victorian firearms licence?

Yes, a SSAA membership can be used as a genuine reason for your Victorian firearms licence application. SSAA are an approved organisation for Sport or Target Shooting and Hunting.

Can an interpreter be used for the Firearms Safety Course and/or the assessment?

Interpreters will not be permitted. The Firearms Safety Course is only delivered in English and the instructors are expected to be able to communicate effectively with the participants in English.
