If you are in charge of feedback design for a unit/ module, an educational developer or academic designer, a course/programme leader, or Dean/ Director of Learning and Teaching, then this workshop is for you! Feedback is a challenging and contentious issue in universities throughout Australia. Despite a substantial body of literature exploring feedback as part of assessment, and countless models, principles and strategies aimed at improving practice, feedback remains a consistent source of dissatisfaction for both students and educators. Feedback regularly receives the lowest course satisfaction ratings in student surveys, with students reporting that feedback is meaningless, confusing, and too late to be useful. However, data also suggest that there are pockets of excellence in feedback across Australian higher education. What are these teaching teams doing that is so good, and what is enabling their successes?
Join us for an interactive half-day workshop, presented in partnership with Curtin University, to explore current educator and student experiences of feedback and discuss strategies to develop and support effective feedback designs in your educational context. This workshop will discuss findings and practice implications arising from a large-scale, OLT-funded multi-institutional study between Deakin, Monash and Melbourne universities. If you are in charge of feedback design for a unit/subject/module, an educational developer or academic designer, a course/programme leader, or an Associate Dean or Associate Head of School (Teaching and Learning) – then this workshop is for you!
Experienced feedback researchers A/Prof. Phillip Dawson and Dr Michael Phillips will share examples of effective feedback designs currently in use in Australian universities, and examine the conditions that can assist effective feedback practices to develop and flourish. Phill and Michael will also present the Feedback for Learning framework, which seeks to guide the development of sustainable and effective feedback practice. Participants will be invited to compare the framework with their own feedback practice, and to consider how effective feedback designs may be implemented across a broad range of contexts. After the workshop, please join us for lunch to continue the morning’s discussions.
