You’ll learn practical sewing techniques used in the fashion industry, guided step by step by experienced industry professionals. From your first stitches to making a simple garment, you’ll learn through hands‑on practice in a supportive, creative environment, gaining confidence, creating sample pieces, and building skills you can apply straight away.

Delivered in CIT’s state-of-the-art fashion studios, this course also introduces modern fashion practices, including sustainability and the circular fashion economy.

Eligibility and entry requirements

To enrol in this course, you must be aged 17 years or older, and be one of the following: 

  • an Australian citizen or permanent resident 
  • a New Zealand citizen 
  • the holder of a permanent humanitarian visa 


Delivery mode

  • Face-to-face course delivered on-campus over 7 weeks (3 hours per week)

  • How to use industrial sewing machines, including straight stitch and overlockers.
  • To sew accurately using basic garment construction techniques.
  • To follow demonstrations and apply techniques to your own sewing work.
  • To create a range of sewn samples for future reference.
  • How to construct a simple garment from start to finish.

  • About sustainability and circular fashion practices in the industry.
