Event description

Description

Soils After Sunset is an opportunity to explore the wonderful world of soils and to learn about how soil testing can help you manage your farm. Everyone is welcome and you can bring any soil test results that you have with you. The topics discussed will include interpreting the results of a soil test, soil fertility and how to change it, soil pH and building soil carbon.

Learn some simple tools for assessing the soil health on your property. Even if you haven’t had a soil test done yet, this is an opportunity to learn more about your greatest natural asset.

Presenters

Jo Powells, Senior Agricultural Advisor for the South East Local Land Services based in Cooma. Jo started her career on the Monaro (the region around Cooma) with the then NSW Agriculture Department running a seven year research project investigating the effects of increased soil fertility and grazing management on native pasture production and biodiversity. She has post graduate qualifications in sustainable agriculture and land rehabilitation and is currently completing a Masters of Natural Resource Management. Her agricultural interests are in pasture legume production constraints, herbicide resistance in weeds, resilience in pasture systems and new invasive plant species. In her current role as a Pastures Agronomist she works with farmers on agricultural and sustainable land management issues.

Chris Curtis, horticulturist. Chris has jointly owned a small farm in Bywong for over 20 years that now has a large kitchen garden, market garden and pastures for Babydoll Southdown sheep and alpacas. Chris has practical experience in improving the poor soils at his property in the vegetable gardens and managing the pastures. He has recently completed a Bachelor of Horticulture from Charles Sturt University and is currently undertaking research into water movement in wicking beds. Chris is donating his time to present at this event.
