The Kids College QLD Explorama workshops at the University of the Sunshine Coast are FUN and EXCITING. Don't miss this exciting day on Saturday, October 29th, 2016. The aim of this day is to provide students with the opportunity to work with other like-minded children and immerse themselves in a full day of critical thinking, problem solving and creativity. The Explorama workshops offered are based around the following areas; Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics - STEAM.

How to register
Students select one Explorama workshop (grade appropriate) to attend. Explorama workshops (except the Maker workshop and Scratch coding workshop) are full-day workshops from 9am-3pm. There is a morning tea at 10:30am and lunch break at 1pm.
In addition to all-day workshops, there will be two Maker Workshops and Scratch Coding workshops of 90 minutes duration.
Session times for Maker and Scratch workshops:
Session 1: 9:00am - 10:30 or Session 2: 11:00am - 12:30 (choose one only).
Students can only attend one Maker workshop OR one full-day workshop. Swapping workshops is not allowable. Please choose one workshop only.

Fun with Maths (Junior) – Grades 1, 2 & 3. Full-day workshop.
Think outside the box! Challenge your mind and fire your imagination. It’s hands-on, interactive and loads of fun! This workshop will enrich your child by presenting them with real-life mathematics problems not found in the classroom. Children are taken on a hands-on mathematical journey of amazing explorations of discovery, creative problem solving and investigation. Using both sides of their brain they will problem solve to crack the code and open the safe, create a tower of light, measure the volume of their hands, save the earth from destruction and much, much more. Fun with Maths is filled with games, challenges and lots of fun for everyone.
Ocean Life Discovery – Grades 1 & 2. Full-day workshop.
Become a Marine Biologist for the day and learn about our amazing ocean creatures and how to look after them. Explore and interact with weird and wonderful live sea creatures on this amazing ocean discovery! Learn about different marine animals and how we can protect them in their beautiful marine environment! So come along and be a ‘Marine Biologist’ for the day with this fabulous, live and interactive, Ocean Exploration!
Mini Monets – Grades 2 & 3. Full-day workshop.
Come on a treasure hunt to explore, create and learn to paint like the great artist Claude Monet.
Discover the magic of light through painting. Students will enjoy mixing colours, learn painting techniques and go on a treasure hunt to explore what inspired the great ‘Monet’. Live for a day in the life of Claude Monet, a founder of French Impressionist painting. Create your own impression.
Cool Scratch coding – Grades 2, 3 & 4. 90 minute workshop
2 sessions available: 9am-10:30 or 11am-12:30 (select one only)
Calling all future computer programmers just beginning, in the middle or highly experienced. Cool Scratch Coding is all about taking you to the next level with cool tools to design and create groovy games. Learn and test your skills in this interactive workshop that will make programming games a snap! **Note this is a 90 minute workshop. Please choose ONE of the session times available**
Mind Blowing Science – Grades 3 & 4. Full-day workshop
Mind Blowing Science is all about seeing how ordinary the world around us is, particularly when viewed through the eyes of a scientist. Budding scientists will engage in hands on activities and experiments that explore the fundamentals of Chemistry, Physics and Biology. There will of course be liquids fizzing, gasses expanding and mysterious substances being discovered – and what’s more, all of the experiments explored, can be repeated at home!
Mindful Mandalas – Grades 4, 5, 6 & 7. Full-day workshop
Spend the day working through a variety of different art mediums and learn the tools and techniques to create beautiful, classic Indian Mandalas. This workshop will explore different artistic styles and you will get to try your hand at watercolour painting, shrinky art and gel ink! There will be the chance to make jewellery, decorate a rock, and create Mandala artworks from watercolours and gel pens. Bring loads of creativity and imagination to help you design and create unique designs and treasures you will love!
Nao Humanoid Robot Coding - Grades 5, 6 & 7. Full-day workshop.
Have you ever wanted to code a humanoid robot? Well this is your chance. Get set for a highly innovative and engaging workshop where you learn the basics of humanoid robotics and programming using the Nao Choregraphe software. Students get to see their programming come to life on a real NAO robot. Can you teach Nao to be a McDonald’s assistant or even teach Nao how to DAB?
CSI - Crime Scene Investigators- Grades 5, 6 & 7. Full-day workshop
Forensic Scientists needed! Put your wit and skills to the test to solve ‘whodunnit’ crimes. Fancy yourself in a team of Forensic Scientists who will be called upon to solve some mind, boggling cases! Put your wit and skills to the test as you solve ‘whodunnit’ crimes. You will check out a crime scene where you will be collecting and evaluating evidence using techniques such as dusting for fingerprints, conducting a splatter analysis and looking at chromatography. All in a day’s work for a Crime Scene Investigator!
Maker Workshop 'Pegbots' – Grades 4, 5, 6 & 7. 90 minute workshop.
2 sessions available: 9am-10:30 or 11am-12:30 (select one only)
Come and join our Maker ‘style’ hands on workshop that delivers fun, explorative learning. You will be using your STEAM skills, innovation and creativity with a variety of materials to make a ‘Pegbot’ using motors, wires, batteries and lots of cool odds and ends. How far can your skills and imagination go? **Note this is a 90 minute workshop. Please choose ONE of the session times available** All parts and materials supplied.
Rockin’ Robotics - Grades 5, 6, 7. Full-day workshop.
Learn to program an EV3 Mindstorm robot and bring it to life to perform a series of exciting problem-solving tasks and challenges including Sumo Wrestling, Search & Rescue and Autonomous Driving. An exciting robotics workshop designed to test the logical thinking and problem-solving skills of our most enquiring minds.

What time does the event start?
Parents with students are advised to go directly to the student’s allocated room by 8.45am to wait to be signed-in by the course leader. All courses have a presentation starting at approximately 2.45pm. Collection of students is by 3pm at the room. Parents are asked to sign-out the student before afternoon departure.
Can my child participate in more than one workshop?
No, students may only attend ONE workshop on the day. Each workshop caters for approximately 15 – 25 students. Some workshops are full-day (9am -3pm) workshops and others are 90 minute workshops.
Is there an age limit to enter the event?
Yes, this event is for school aged children in grades 1 - 7 only. Children may only nominate workshops that correspond with the year level they are at school. Each workshop outline states the appropriate year level that the course is designed for.
What are my parking options at the event?
Parking at the University of the Sunshine on weekend is free. Closest parking to the event is P3 or P4. For more information visit - Parking USC
What do I need to I bring to the event?
Meals – Meals are not provided. Students will need to bring their own drinks, morning tea and lunch for the day. Please do not bring foods containing nut or nut products.
Clothing – Students are advised to wear casual, comfortable clothing , enclosed footwear & bring a hat.
Equipment – Students are advised to bring a pencil case with scissors, glue etc. Some courses require a USB. For art course please bring an old shirt of art smock.

Kids College Queensland Explorama workshops and holiday programs are FUN and EXCITING. The aim is to provide students with the opportunity to work with other like-minded children and immerse themselves in a full day of critical thinking, problem solving and creativity. We are committed to delivering the highest quality workshops, while providing students with the opportunity to explore their potential and reach for the stars. Workshops include: science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics, environmental studies, robotics, coding, languages and culture, legal studies, writing, illustration, animation and the human body.
At Kids College Queensland we believe it is important to nurture and nourish all gifts and talents and provide students with an early-stage learning experience in a setting that exudes educational excellence. Kids College Queensland also provides a range of Professional Development opportunities for Educators ranging from Gifted & Talented Education to Philosophy & Thinking Skills.
The Explorama program has been developed for the problem-solving, creative, intellectual child. Typically, students who attend Explorama have been identified gifted and talented, participate in the acceleration and enrichment programs at their school, and have strong learning abilities and strengths in particular curriculum areas.
Schools are encouraged to nominate students to participate in any of our programs that would suit the child’s particular strengths and interests. Parents can also nominate their child if they believe they have the capacity to work in a group of high achieving students.
