Expanded Drawing #3: Improvisation & Exploration
The third class in a course of three artist-led workshops exploring a process-based, experimental approach to figure drawing.
Join us for an evening of experimental drawing techniques, where we will explore a range of starting points designed to free up our life drawing practice.
There will be a live model but this is not a traditional life drawing class. We will explore drawing parameters such as scale, observation, materiality, collaboration, layered imagery using projections, and depicting movement.
Each week expands on the previous week. Sessions can be taken individually or as a course of three.
At the end of each workshop we will debrief and discuss together.
Fees include all drawing instruction (two facilitators), art materials and light snacks.
Small group capped at 10 participants.
For beginners and experienced artists.
Session dates (consecutive Wednesdays):
• Wed 4 March - 6.00 – 8:30pm: Line & Seeing
• Wed 11 March - 6.00 – 8:30pm: Tone & Materiality
• Wed 18 March - 6.00 – 8:30pm: Improvisation & Exploration
Artists Briony Barr (BFA / MFA) and Jacqueline Smith (BA Fine Art / Grad.Dip.Ed) have been drawing nerds since they were teenagers, beginning with developing collaborative drawing techniques at what became known as ‘drawing camp’ in the late 90s. Between 2008 and 2018 as part of Scale Free Network: art-science collaborative, Jacqui and Briony co-developed workshops and taught drawing to students of all ages, inspired by observation of the ‘invisible’ micro-scale. In recent years, both have explored experimental and live drawing in collaboration with musicians and performers, with a particular interest in the relationship between drawing and improvisation.
