Description

Please join us for tea and lamingtons to launch the exhibition Ethel Hoskins Hayton - A Woman of Many Hats with special guests including curator Dr Ika Willis and artist Darian Zam. Bring your own stories of Ethel, or come along to learn more about this local legend.

Ethel Hoskins Hayton immigrated to Wollongong from England in 1930, at the age of sixteen, and on her death in 1988 was described as ‘Wollongong’s most outstanding citizen’. A professional journalist and author, she helped found the city’s Art Gallery and University. She was involved in a huge number of local organizations, and closely connected to local communities of artists, journalists, activists, migrants and scholars.

This exhibition explores Ethel’s fascinating life and the lives she touched in her sixty years in Wollongong. Curated by Dr Ika Willis
