This is the first of five Think Tanks led by ACCA over 2020, this forum delves into recent global debates and phenomena including the increasing incursion of private interests into public culture; the dynamic relations between urban design, surveillance, regulation and mis/behaving bodies, as well as improvisation and play; ideas of community, collectivity and the commons; the cultivation of fear in media and urban space; and ongoing debates related to the public broadcasting of private lives; freedom of speech and censorship; and the ways in which technology, knowledge and mobility impact upon and transform our understanding of public space, culture and its values.

Think Tank #1 contributors include Dr Marnie Badham, Vice-Chancellor's Postdoctoral Research Fellow, School of Art, RMIT University; Max Delany, Artistic Director and CEO, ACCA; Eugenia Lim, artist, editor and Artistic Director of Aphids; Annika Kristensen, Senior Curator, ACCA; Grace McQuilten, Lecturer in Art History and Theory, and Leader of the Contemporary Art and Social Transformation Research Group in the School of Art, RMIT University; Nur Shkembi, artist, curator and PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne; Professor Nikos Papastergiadis, School of Culture and Communication; and Director of the Research Unit for Public Culture, University of Melbourne.

The 2020 Think Tanks are associated with the forthcoming ACCA exhibition Who's Afraid of Public Space? (12 December 2020 - 14 March 2021). Think Tank #1 is a program of Melbourne Design Week.
