Event description

Description

See Ruth Pullin, streamed live from the Art Gallery of Ballarat’s Eugene von Guérard: artist–traveller exhibition, in conversation with Pictures Librarian Gerard Hayes.

Ruth Pullin, exhibition curator, and Gerard Hayes, Librarian from the Pictures Collection at the State Library, will discuss the exhibited drawings and rediscovered sketchbook of 19th-century landscape painter von Guérard, borrowed from the Library’s collection.

Their conversation will also reveal the depth of the Library’s extensive holdings of drawings of the Ballarat goldfields, Geelong and 1850s Melbourne.

About Ruth Pullin

Dr Ruth Pullin is the curator of the exhibition Eugene von Guérard: Artist–Traveller (Art Gallery of Ballarat, 25 March – 27 May 2018), and the author of The artist as traveller: the sketchbooks of Eugene von Guérard. She was co-curator of the National Gallery of Victoria’s 2011 travelling exhibition, Eugene von Guérard: nature revealed, and principal author of the exhibition catalogue. Her research on von Guérard’s sketchbooks has been undertaken with the support of a Creative Fellowship at the State Library of Victoria and has been published in Australian and international journals.

About Gerard Hayes

Gerard has worked at State Library of Victoria for nearly 30 years, during which time he has worked in both the Australian Manuscripts Collection and the Pictures Collection. He has published writing on various aspects of colonial culture, such as the Burke and Wills expedition and the artists Ludwig Becker, William Strutt and Charles Summers.
